Songs without Names: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Vol. VII-XII-CXXV

With regard to the unknown, the Latin peoples are

With regard to the unknown, the Latin peoples are

More guarded than Germanics;

The Romans remained securely within the Roman domain;

Whereas the Germans readily dreamt of distant shores.

In this is neither blame nor praise;

In every people there are men whom

The intellect raises above sentimental limitations;

There never existed a people without doors.

Face à l’inconnu, les Latins

Face à l’inconnu, les Latins

Sont plus confinés que les Germains ;

Les Romains résidaient fermement en terre romaine ;

Les Germains aimaient rêver de plages plus lointaines.

Il n’y a là nul reproche ni louange ;

Dans chaque peuple il est des hommes

Que l’Esprit élève au-dessus du sentiment limité ;

Car des peuples sans portes il n’y en eut jamais.

Dem Fremden gegenüber sind Romanen

Dem Fremden gegenüber sind Romanen

Mehr in sich eingeschlossen als Germanen;

Die Römer saßen fest im Römschen Lande;

Germanen träumten gern vom fernsten Strande.

Darin ist weder Tadel weder Lob;

Bei jedem Volke gibt es Menschen, die

Der Geist über beschränktes Fühlen hob;

Denn Völker ohne Türen gab es nie.
