“There is no power or strength except in God”—

“There is no power or strength except in God”—

Thus spake the Prophet. Why this repetition?

One is not speaking of two different things;

The two words merely emphasize the meaning.

Just as in the Psalm: “Thy rod and thy staff”:

God sent us only one great consolation.

Nevertheless, two meanings are contained therein —

The Semitic spirit likes to express itself thus.

« Il n’est ni puissance ni force qu’auprès de Dieu » —

« Il n’est ni puissance ni force qu’auprès de Dieu » —

Selon le Prophète. Que signifie la répétition ?

Non qu’il s’agit de deux choses différentes ;

La dualité de l’expression n’est qu’accentuation du sens.

De même dans le Psaume « Ton bâton et ta houlette » :

Dieu ne fit descendre qu’une seule grande consolation.

Deux sens y sont néanmoins contenus —

L’esprit des Sémites voulait le formuler ainsi.

“Es gibt nicht Macht noch Kraft außer bei Gott” —

„Es gibt nicht Macht noch Kraft außer bei Gott“ —

So der Prophet. Was meint die Wiederholung?

Nicht dass von zweierlei die Rede sei;

Des Ausdrucks Zweiheit ist nur Sinnbetonung.

Und so im Psalm „dein Stecken und dein Stab“:

Gott sandt nur Einen großen Trost herab.

Zwei Sinne sind trotzdem dabei enthalten —

So wollt es der Semiten Geist gestalten.
