World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes I-III-LXV
They think of God and count
They think of God and count
Their prayers in the flickering light;
With devotion they turn their holy beads,
Until the thread breaks.
High above a lark is singing,
Full of joy before God’s Face;
It trills as it rises in the sky,
And counts not its jubilations.
Did not St. Bernard say:
Love is, because it is love?
And blessèd he who out of love,
Forgets counting — and forgets himself.
Ils pensent à Dieu et ils comptent
Ils pensent à Dieu et ils comptent
Les prières à la lumière vacillante ;
Ils font glisser les perles sacrées
Avec zèle, jusqu’à ce que le fil se brise.
Tout là-haut chante une alouette
Remplie de joie devant la Face de Dieu ;
Elle trille, elle monte au ciel —
Elle ne compte pas ses cris d’allégresse.
Comme le dit saint Bernard : l’amour
Est, parce qu’il est amour.
Et heureux qui en aimant
Oublie de compter — s’oublie lui-même.
Sie denken an Gott und sie zählen
Sie denken an Gott und sie zählen
Gebete bei flackerndem Licht;
Sie drehen die heiligen Perlen
Mit Fleiß, bis der Faden zerbricht.
Hoch oben singt eine Lerche
Voll Freude vor Gottes Gesicht;
Sie trillert, sie steiget zum Himmel —
Sie zählt ihr Gejubel nicht.
Sagt doch Sankt Bernhard: die Liebe
Ist, weil sie Liebe ist.
Und selig, wer beim Lieben
Das Zählen — sich selbst vergisst.
