World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes I-III-XLVIII

Some craftsmanships we can scarcely understand:

Some craftsmanships we can scarcely understand:

For instance, wood-block carving. I choose my words with care:

Who has the time to carve so finely —

Even the smallest dot? To me it is incomprehensible.

The result may well enchant us;

That we cannot understand the process,

What does it matter? We must simply accept it.

Dextérités artistiques que nous comprenons à peine :

Dextérités artistiques que nous comprenons à peine :

Telle la gravure sur bois. J’y réfléchis mûrement :

Qui a donc le temps de ciseler chose si fine —

Le plus petit point ? Ce m’est inconcevable.

Le résultat final peut certes nous enchanter ;

Que nous ne puissions saisir le processus,

Cela importe-t-il ? Il faut donc nous y résigner.

Kunstfertigkeiten, die wir kaum verstehen:

Kunstfertigkeiten, die wir kaum verstehen:

Etwa der Holzschnitt. Ich bedenk es reiflich:

Wer hat denn Zeit, so Feines auszuschneiden —

Den kleinsten Punkt? Es ist mir unbegreiflich.

Das Endergebnis mag uns wohl entzücken;

Dass wir den Vorgang nicht erfassen können,

Was tut’s? Man muss sich eben darein schicken.
