What is artificial is contrary to nature.
What is artificial is contrary to nature.
It will be objected that, in the last analysis,
The artificial too bespeaks the workings of Nature —
Since everything comes from God’s Hands.
This is true, but it does not prevent
The artificial from contradicting the
The universe wants to manifest both degrees.

Les choses artificielles tout compte fait
Témoignent aussi de l’économie naturelle —
Car la Main de Dieu est propriétaire de tout.
Cela est certain, mais n’empêche point
Que l’artificiel contredit l’authentique —
Et l’Univers entend montrer les deux niveaux.

Man wendet ein: auch Künstlichkeiten zeugen
Doch letzten Endes vom Naturbetrieb —
Denn alles hat ja Gottes Hand zu eigen.
Dies ist gewiss, jedoch verhindert nicht
Dass Künstliches dem Echten widerspricht —
Und beide Stufen will das Weltall zeigen.
