World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes IV-VII-CXX

Philosophers who write books

Philosophers who write books

Have as a principle to exaggerate —

This is the best way to achieve originality,

And it spares the brain the trouble to be wise.

That two and two make four is too familiar —

So they say it makes five, and they say it aloud.

They think that everything lies within their grasp —

That only what they blatantly exaggerate will succeed.

Many sages wrote nothing —

But not one of them did violence to the Light;

Not one exaggerated what is right.

No sage ever misunderstood the way of truth.

Mais nul n’a fait violence à la Lumière ;

Erfolg hab nur, was kühn man überspannt.

Gar viele Weise haben nichts geschrieben —

Doch keiner hat dem Licht Gewalt getan;

Keiner hat das, was recht ist, übertrieben.

Kein Weiser missverstand des Wahren Bahn.
