World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes IV-VII-LIX
Cossacks came one day, long ago,
Cossacks came one day, long ago,
From their distant land.
One would have loved to hear their horses’
They sang as if they were on horseback
With lance, saber, and swinging whips;
With manly singing, in deep bass
Had one encountered them on the steppes,
One might not have felt much at ease.
Un jour des cosaques arrivèrent de voyage —
Un jour des cosaques arrivèrent de voyage —
Il y a longtemps — de leur terre lointaine ;
On aurait aimer ouïr un trottinement de chevaux —
Ils chantaient comme s’ils étaient à cheval,
Avec lance, sabre et knout brandi ;
Avec un chant viril en basse profonde —
Si on les avait rencontrés sur la steppe,
On ne se serait pas senti fort à l’aise.
Kosaken kamen einmal hergereist —
Kosaken kamen einmal hergereist —
Vor langer Zeit — aus ihrer fernen Erde;
Pferdegetrappel hätt man gern gehört —
Sie sangen so, als wären sie zu Pferde
Mit Lanze, Säbel und geschwungner Knute;
Mit männlichem Gesang in tiefem Bass —
Hätt man sie auf der Steppe angetroffen,
Es wäre einem nicht so wohl zumute.
