He wanted to convert them to the One good God.
Later he became an explorer in Africa —
He did too much, and could not be cured.
During his career, he struggled
He suffered from the world and from himself.
The heroic man’s deep piety was
His heart stood still as he knelt in prayer.

Des Helden tiefe Frömmigkeit war offenbar —
Sein Herz stand still, als knieend er am Beten war.
