World Wheel: Poems by Frithjof Schuon Volumes IV-VII-XXIX
When I decorate a house or an apartment,
When I decorate a house or an apartment,
I keep in mind three artistic summits:
The Maghrib, Japan, and the South Seas. Simple and beautiful,
These are three formal languages, and three spiritual worlds.
For the ambience that is the framework
Of our everyday life is not indifferent;
It should not be dull or heavy,
But close to nature, simple and free.
The peasant’s wooden house can also be a model;
A primordial dwelling — even in our time.
Quand j’aménage un foyer, une habitation,
Quand j’aménage un foyer, une habitation,
J’admets comme art trois sommets : le Maghreb ;
Puis le Japon ; le Pacifique sud. Sobres et beaux ;
Trois langages formels et trois mondes spirituels.
Car l’ambiance appelée à former le cadre
De notre vie quotidienne n’est pas indifférente ;
Ne la rendez ni étouffante ni surchargée,
Mais proche de la nature, aussi sobre et libre.
La maison paysanne en bois peut être un modèle ;
Habitat primordial — jusqu’à notre époque.
Wenn ich ein Heim einrichte, eine Wohnung,
Wenn ich ein Heim einrichte, eine Wohnung,
Lass ich als Kunst drei Höhepunkte gelten:
Maghreb; dann Japan; Südsee. Schlicht und schön;
Drei Formensprachen und drei Geisteswelten.
Denn die Umgebung, die der Rahmen sei
Für unsern Alltag, ist nicht einerlei;
Lasst sie nicht schwül und überladen sein,
Sondern nah der Natur, so schlicht und frei.
Das Bauernhaus aus Holz kann Vorbild sein;
Urweltlich — bis in unsre Zeit hinein.
